Hostname, also referred to as a Computer Name or Sitename, is a domain name assigned to a host computer (computer you’re currently logged in to).
Below is an example of a hostname that is assigned to a computer connected to the Internet using Time Warner Cable service:
cpe-72-225-191-74.nyc.res.rr.com
As you can see in this example, this hostname has the IP address of 72.225.191.74, “NYC” for New York City, “res” stands for “residential” (versus “commercial”) and “rr.com” is the Internet Service Provider (ISP) hosting the customer – Time Warner Cable (Road Runner) in this case.
When referring to an Internet webpage or location, a hostname is often referred to as a Domain Name.
